Royal Caribbean cruise ships are innovative and exciting. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines History
Royal Caribbean cruise line was founded in 1969 as a Norwegian shipping company. Royal Caribbean's first cruise ship, Song of Norway, was put into service in 1970. Throughout the years Royal Caribbean has produced some of the largest cruise ships at sea. In 1986 Royal Caribbean purchase a shore line property in Haiti, now called Labadee, for use as a private vacation port. A few years later Royal Caribbean also purchased Coco Cay, Bahamas, to be used as a second private vacation destination.
Royal Caribbean cruise ships are modern and large, with 11 new cruise ships put in service since the year 2000. Celebrity Cruises merged with Royal Caribbean International in 1997. Together, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean cruise lines have a combined total of 29 cruise ships at sea. Royal Caribbean also purchased Pullmantur Cruises of Spain in 2006. Azamara Cruises was recently created as a subsidiary of Celebrity Cruises in 2007, and additional new cruise line brands were recently announced to help expand cruise line travel in Europe.
