Caribbean Islands
Caribbean Islands are the islands within the Caribbean Sea region of the Americas. The Caribbean Tectonic Plate is home to more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays. Caribbean is often used in cruise vacation terms to describe the islands of the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the West Indies, Jamaica, Cozumel Mexico, and more, excluding mainly the nations of Cuba and Haiti.
The geography and climate of the Caribbean Islands varies. Some of the caribbean Islands have relatively flat terrain, while others show signs of past volcanic activity, forming mountain ranges which helped to create today's beautiful waterfalls and tropical jungles. The Caribbean climate is often described as sub-tropical to tropical, influenced greatly by the trade winds which blow from the east towards the northwest up the Caribbean Island chain.
Caribbean Islands Cruises
Many of the Caribbean islands are labeled as conservation hot spots because they support very diverse ecosystems. As we all cruise the Caribbean and to other exotic places around the world, it's important to respect any rules set up by the cruise lines and conservation groups. Some of the islands are still colonies of European nations, or dependent territories or the Americas and European nations. In the table below is a list of Caribbean islands that you will commonly find on Caribbean maps. Limits set by sailing time, island resources, and cruise line customer demand prevent cruise ships from cruising to all of these islands. Example cruise vacation destinations are available for review here on our Caribbean cruise web page.
