How do I wash my clothes while at sea?
Most Caribbean cruise ships have small self service laundry areas. About four
washers and dryers or more and a few irons and ironing boards. The cost per
washer load averages about $2.00 per washer and $2.00 per dryer load. Vending
machines dispense small boxes of detergent and softener at about $1.00 per box.
Do I need a passport to travel on a cruise ship?
The U.S. government will soon require all cruise ship guests to possess a passport while traveling by cruise lines. The passport requirement may become effective as early as Summer 2008. If you plan to travel on a cruise or otherwise in 2008 and beyond, we recommend that you get a passport sooner rather than latter.
What security screening is done, is it like at airports?
Look at your ticket (it's your contract) prior to leaving your house. All luggage will go through a
X-Ray machine. Carry on items have width restrictions similar to that of airports, larger bags get checked in. Some cruise ship restrictions exist due to fire safety, to prevent violent crimes, or for general safety concerns. No candles, irons, or heating pads are allowed on ship to prevent fires while at sea for example. No bicycles, scuba tanks, or surfboards are allowed on board a cruise ship. Snorkel gear, skateboards, tennis rackets, golf clubs, fishing rods, and roller blades are allowed for use in port.
Can I pack a hair dryer?
Cruise ships frequently will have hair dryers inside each stateroom's bathroom, inside the room at a desk, or at a vanity. Some cruise ships may not have hair dryers at all for use.
How much do I tip staff while I'm on a cruise?
Cruise lines may automatically charge gratuities for dining, room cleaning, and other services. This is often regarded as a convenience, and can be added to your account for payment later. The cruise ship information desk will give you recommended estimates if asked, about 15% on food and drinks, $3.00 per day for room cleaning.
What do I need to pack?
Resort wear. Casual clothing is generally worn on cruise ships and while in port. Some cruise lines offer elegant dining parties for which you might need to bring or rent a tuxedo. Semi-formal parties might also exist. Rubber soled sandals, boat shoes, or sneakers should be worn on deck. Plan ahead for any shore excursion adventures. Bring a sweater or jacket for cool evenings at sea. You generally can't wear shorts, tank tops and bathing suits to the main Dinning Room, though alternative dinner areas are generally available.
How do I get money while at sea?
ATM machines are generally available on each cruise ship. It is possible for the ATM funds to run out. ATM transaction fees can be $5.00 or more. Travelers Checks are often more convenient and a secure way to access your vacation money. No fee is charged for using a travelers check, because they are considered to be cash. You can get cash or make purchases on the cruise ship and while in port with travelers checks.
Will I be bored while at sea?
Most people will not be bored. Between shore visits there are plenty of food and drink services to enjoy, singles parties and events, youth programs, casino gambling, karaoke, movies, beauty seminars, auctions, talent shows, shopping, dance classes, games, pool, water slides, lots of friendly people, and more.
What is the drinking age on a cruise ship?
Cruisers must be 21 years old to drink alcohol. Don't forget your ID.
Are infants allowed on a cruise ship?
Each cruise line has it's own minimum age policy somewhere between 6 months and 12 months. The policy is to help protect the infant at sea as much as the comfort of the other guests.
Is there a luggage limit?
Cruise lines generally do not set luggage limits. However, if you travel by plane along the way, you must be ready to check baggage with an airline that will more than likely impose penalties or restrictions on luggage size and total weight.
What happens if a hurricane hits?
Hurricane season is June through November. The cruise lines of course wish to protect both guests and that huge expensive of a cruise ship. If a hurricane is looming, call the cruise lines Reservations department the day prior to departure for updates. It is rare for a cancellation to occur due to a hurricane.
What if I need a doctor while at sea?
Infirmary staff is available onboard each cruise ship. Motion Sickness or Meclizine (Bonine) is available from the infirmary, room service or information desk, generally free of charge. A motion sickness shot can be given to those who are actively vomiting, usually a fee is charged for the shot.
